Session Chair: Napat Jitpaisarnwattana
Saturday, 11 November 2023 10:00
Session: Session 1
Room: Sri Sachanalai
Presentation Type: Paper Presentation
Teaching second language (L2) reading and writing skills in an online learning environment has increasingly become common place due to rapid advances in educational technology that very closely approximate a face-to-face learning environment. In fact, reading and writing are the very same fundamental language skills underlying online classroom interaction, so the very nature of the online learning environment helps promote and develop students’ L2 reading and writing skills all the while promoting E-literacy skills enabling students to compete not only in an academic environment but also in their workplace in an ever-changing digital age. For those interested in developing a new or improving an existing online L2 reading and/or writing course, this presentation will highlight specific activities and online tools that simulate face-to-face classroom activities using synchronous conferencing tools with student breakout rooms, voice and discussion boards, interactive e-texts, and Web 2.0 tools as well as the demonstrate the ways in which to seamlessly embed and organize them within a Learning Management System (LMS). Furthermore, through a comparative analysis of the success rates of face-to-face versus online sections of the the same L2 reading and writing courses, results indicate that the online modality was just as effective as the face-to face modality whereby success rate and effectiveness were determined by a common final exam or essay that was administered across all sections of the L2 reading and writing courses.
Abstract Summary
Teaching second language (L2) reading and writing skills in an online learning environment has increasingly become common place due to rapid advances in educational technology that very closely approximate a face-to-face learning environment. Join us in our presentation where we will highlight specific activities and online tools that simulate face-to-face classroom activities as well as demonstrate the ways in which to seamlessly embed and organize them within a Learning Management System (LMS). Furthermore, through a comparative analysis of the success rates of face-to-face versus online sections of the same L2 reading and writing courses, we will show that the online modality was just as effective as the face-to face modality whereby success rate and effectiveness were determined by a common final exam or essay that was administered across all sections of the L2 reading and writing courses.
