The Linguacuisine and ENACT apps and websites provide an infrastructure for learners to take an active role carrying out universal and enjoyable real-world tasks – cooking and eating food, learning languages, cuisines and cultures! The free apps help learners learn a language while cooking a meal. Choose a delicious recipe in a language, then your own smartphone/tablet will speak to you in the foreign language in your own kitchen and talk you through all of the stages of cooking the recipe. If you can’t understand, just press a button to get a photo, audio or video explaining what to do. Users can access different levels of help to support their language learning. When you’ve finished, eat the food you’ve cooked and learn something about the culture of the country.

Linguacuisine and ENACT are an engaging way to learn about foreign languages, cultures and cuisines and you get to eat what you produce. When you are cooking, you involve all of your senses in the learning experience – touch, smell and taste as well as hearing and seeing. This is task-based language learning with a real product at the end of it and is intended to improve international understanding and communication.

Learners can also use the recipe author tools to upload their own favourite recipe from their own country in their own language. That means that anyone anywhere in the world will be able to watch videos and listen to audios of them guiding the viewers through cooking their recipe!

The talk covers aspects of pedagogical and technological design, implementation and research findings, as well as demonstrating how the apps work. We consider the research evidence on learning aspects of L2 in this informal setting. We co-designed the apps with local communities of refugees, asylum seekers and migrants, using EU grants. We explain how we organized co-design workshops and the challenges and outcomes involved.
