The rapid development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology has promoted its application in various fields. In recent years, the usage of AI in English education has received a lot of attention from researchers. At present, many Chinese AI English learning platforms have entered our vision, such as Liulishuo, Pigaiwang, EAP Talk and so on. There have also been many studies on the application of these software in English education. The autonomy, adaptability, and interactivity of AI can not only bring new development opportunities for English teaching and learning, but also bring new avenues for the development of English textbooks. The emergence of AI English textbooks can also provide new teaching and learning methods for teachers and students. However, there are still few English textbooks that applying AI, and more in-depth research are needed to provide insights into the development of AI English textbooks. Therefore, we have designed this pioneering research to investigate the perceptions of university students on using AI English textbooks for learning and teaching. Data is collected from students in different regions of Chinese Mainland through questionnaires and semi-structured interview. In this research, explanatory design is employed, which means that questionnaire is the dominant research method, and follow-up semi-structured interview is used to further explore and explain the data collected from questionnaire. The research is still ongoing, so there is no specific experimental data available. The research results will be presented on the conference. This study aims to provide some guidance and motivation for the design of AI English textbooks, and help expand new ideas for the application of AI in English education. Some references for promoting the development of interactive and digital textbooks will be given through the research results. Future studies can be done in different context, and different research methods to conduct more comprehensive research on the application of AI English textbooks.

Abstract Summary
Using AI in the field of English education may bring new developments to English language teaching and learning. Integrating AI technology into English textbooks can bring significant changes to them and promote the development of e-textbooks and interactive textbooks. This study aims to investigate undergraduates’ perception towards integrating AI technology in textbook. Participants are undergraduates who are recruited from Chinese mainland universities. This research employs mixed method to collect data. Participants will fill in questionnaire first, and then undergraduates who provide typical data are invited to participate in the interview part. Hope this pioneering research can provide some inspiration for future research.
